EPA's National Environmental Performance Track program is a nation-wide, voluntary environmental leadership program which recognizes organizations and operations with top environmental performance. Participants in the program are those who go beyond compliance with regulatory requirements to attain levels of environmental performance and management that benefit people, communities, and the environment. Participating members set environmental performance goals and commitments with specific performance measurements to meet these goals. Participation in the Performance Track Program enables facilities to implement flexible, efficient approaches to environmental protection. Participating facilities receive several incentives in return for their environmental commitments. For additional information about EPA's National Performance Track Program, visit
their website.

In December 2000, LP's Hines, Oregon, engineered wood products plant received Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) Green Permit, the first of its kind. The Hines plant is one of only two facilities to meet the strict requirements of the Green Permits Program.
The Oregon Green Permits Program rewards facilities that voluntarily go the extra mile to reduce environmental impact. The program encourages companies to strive for creative solutions and systematic approaches to environmental management and supports community involvement.
The Hines plant is an excellent example of the success of LP's own Environmental Management System. The facility has reduced air emissions to a level significantly below levels allowed by its Oregon DEQ air permit, and has generated more than $90,000 each year through its planer shavings recycling effort. In addition, the plant created a community advisory council to encourage interaction with the facility's neighbors and the public.
In March of 2000, LP's Tomahawk, Wisconsin, composite siding mill received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ClimateWise Achievement Award. The facility was also featured by the State of Wisconsin as a "Champion of Efficiency" for its implementation of energy efficient and pollution prevention measures. Please go
