What’s the moisture content of lumber vs. LSL? And why does it matter?

Typically, when lumber is delivered to the jobsite, it has a moisture content of 19%. Over time, it dries into balance with the air moisture in the home, usually about 10%. And as it dries, it shrinks. The lumber will pull away from walls and other members, popping nails along the way, which can cause squeaking, creaking, cracking, out-of-true windows, hard-to-shut doors, and other callback headaches. LP SolidStart LSL is engineered to about 9% moisture content, which means means greater resistance to shrinking, twisting, popping or deforming.

Will LP SolidStart LSL swell when it gets wet?

Yes, like any wood product it will swell when it gets wet. However, LP SolidStart LSL has edge- and end-seal to help keep the moisture out. Additionally, LP SolidStart LSL is manufactured in a steam injection press, which means its moisture content is uniform across the product and is similar to that of the environment in which it will be used.

Will LP SolidStart LSL emit formaldehyde?

No. LP’s SolidStart LSL uses MDI resin which is formaldehyde free. Its emissions are negligible.

Why does LP SolidStart LSL not have the usual “characteristics” found in lumber – like knots, twists, and splits?

Defective strands that don't meet the specifications for use in LP SolidStart LSL are used to power the manufacturing process. The result is a product that's durable and consistent from piece to piece.
